The moderately sized
Salmon River flows north from Strathcona Park, and enters Johnstone
Strait at Sayward (Kelsey Bay) on the east coast of Vancouver Island.
Fishing pressure on the Salmon River is light, with the fishable length
of the river being 25km - to the confluence of Kay Creek.
Traditionally,
the Salmon River was known to produce the largest steelhead on Vancouver
Island, and is now recovering after successful fertilizing programs.
Expect rainbow trout, dolly varden and both summer and winter steelhead.
The Salmon River also provides a good fly fishery for sea-run cutthroat,
particularly in the lower reaches of the river.
Access is good via Highway 19, the Salmon River logging mainline,
and various secondary logging roads.

Additional Info: A car is adequate for access to the lower
river, but a truck is recommended for areas upstream. A campsite
